Drop in the Ocean -- a Fredrick Zoller fanmix

"I keep feeling smaller and smaller."

always like this // bombay bicycle club
Oh she can wait
For what I can give.
She knows what I am but,
She won’t believe me.

barnacle goose // born ruffians
And I'm frustrated with myself,
but I can't change.
I don't want to be me anymore.

helena beat // foster the people
Yeah, yeah, and it’s O.K.
I tie my hands up to a chair so I don’t fall that way.
Yeah, yeah, and I’m alright.
I took a sip of something poisoned but I’ll hold on tight.

a fine evening for a rogue // lydia
We're cursed with disease.
I have to be perfect,
And you're not better than me, no.

the cave // mumford & sons
The harvest left no food for you to eat.
You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see,
But I have seen the same
I know the shame in your defeat.

i need my girl // the national
I am good, I am grounded.
Davy says that I look taller.
I can’t get my head around it,
I keep feeling smaller and smaller.

unbelievers // vampire weekend
I know I love you,
nd you love the sea.
But what holy water contains a little drop,
a little drop for me?

numb // marina and the diamonds
One track mind like a gold fish,
Stuck inside my petri dish.
I can't breath and I can't smile,
This better be worth my while.

(i didn't do this with my last fanmix but i have a lot of feelings about Fredrick Zoller so here they are)

and that's it!! my main goal with this fanmix was to bring light to both the internal and external conflicts Fredrick's character face, as well as how those manifest themselves in his relationship with Shosanna. i chose to begin the mix with something light and inviting, while also introducing some of the darker themes, which "always like this" does quite well.

the next two songs, "barnacle goose" and "helena beat" place focus on Fredrick's feelings towards himself, and his own personal image. having been thrust into fame with little to no time for recovery, he's up against the dizzying world of stardom with a half-healed heart and tender mind. i can also imagine the inner turmoil taking place over the fact that it's the Third Reich itself that dragged him into such a situation in the first place (i.e. "
I took a sip of something poisoned but I’ll hold on tight.") "unbelievers" can also be placed in this group, really. i find it fitting that Fredrick would contemplate his own mortality and faith during such a solitary period in his life - which could refer to both the war and his fame.

"a fine evening for a rogue,"  "the cave," and "i need my girl" work very well in the context of Fredrick's relationship with Shosanna. seen from his point of view, she is a small oasis of reality in the stifling world he's been surrounded by. she treats him as he is, a human, having no reason to disregard his faults, and his own pain resonates so clearly with hers. "i need my girl" especially, is something of a mix between this theme and the one discussed in the paragraph before. while Fredrick wants to believe more than anything that he has a grip on reality, it's undeniable that he has little control over where his fame takes him and what he does. as implied (quite literally) by the title, Shosanna is such an integral part of his short life; they both offer each other a way out and a future that did not before seem possible, and perhaps never will be, but neither can deny that dream exists.

the final song, "numb" is the culmination of each of these themes, and possibly the most important. it is separate from the rest superficially in that it has a female vocalist, and while this merely occurred because i found it fitting regardless, i like the differentiation this creates. the chorus succinctly reiterates what the mix has been stating all along, now in the context of each theme introduced, while the following verses hint at some sort of desperation present.

"Shine, looking for the golden light
Oh, it's a reasonable sacrifice."

as far as lyrics go, the song describes Fredrick's dilemma more or less perfectly. finally, the almost operatic ending and vocals bring this short mix to a close.

This mix is so great! I keep listening to it - especially the tracks by The National and Marina and the Diamonds. Ugh, these are all so perfect and you did such a beautiful job with it ;-;

Your love and passion for Fredrick Zoller and the full understanding of his character is gorgeous and touching.

Shosanna is such an integral part of his short life; they both offer each other a way out and a future that did not before seem possible, and perhaps never will be, but neither can deny that dream exists.

Ugh so perfect.

All of it, perfect.
